Paul Smith
Sir Paul Smith was born in Nottinghamshire in 1946 and was knighted by the Queen in 2000 for his outstanding contribution to British menswear and being a British menswear icon.
An avid cyclist when he was young, Paul’s dream was to become a professional racing cyclist until his hopes were dashed at the age of 17 when he suffered a terrible accident. He was hospitalized for six months and in that time he had made some new friends, and decided to take some evening classes for tailoring so he could create the clothes that he wanted.
Paul’s girlfriend (now wife) encouraged him to set up his own boutique, and in 1970 his first shop was opened. By 1976 he had shown his first menswear collection in Paris under the Paul Smith label.
Within 20 years of his introduction to fashion Paul Smith had established himself as the pre-eminent British designer. Paul Smith has the ability to anticipate, and even spark off trends not only fashion but in the wider context of popular culture. He manages to transmit a genuine sense of humor and mischief mixed with his love of tradition and the classic.
Paul Smith is a global brand and his work is often recognized for the signature coloured stripes that often appear in his designs.
