Braces
Braces were first made and sold in England by Albert Thurston in 1820, nearly 200 years ago.
Braces were commonly used as part of men's underwear to keep their trousers up as the fashion back then was for the high wasted trouser, and was not practical to keep ones trousers up with a belt.
Braces were usually kept out of view by wearing a waistcoat over the top.
As the fashion for men's trousers saw the waistline gradually lower, the use of braces became less and less as men opted for wearing belts, especially as the 1930's saw less of the waistcoat in mens dress.
However in the '40s trousers had a much fuller cut and braces re appeared again.
Over the decades braces (often called 'suspenders‚' outside the UK), have come back in and out of fashion and is and accessory loved by the type of gentleman who is often very established and usually very sure of their own power, presence and style.
Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale was probably the most famous British actor known to wear braces in modern times on screen.
Leading public figures from US popular culture such as Larry King, and Michael Douglas as Gordon Geko in Wall Street where also famous for being known to strut around wearing their trademark braces almost as symbols of power or authority.
