Hackett London
In 1979, Jeremy Hackett and Ashley Lloyd-Jennings met while looking for second hand traditional British men’s clothing on Portobello Road in West London. A business partnership was started and they opened a stall on the very same road selling exactly the kind of clothes they had been looking for.
Just four years later with a thriving business, they opened their first shop on what their bank manager called “the wrong end” of New Kings Road and Hackett, the brand, was born.
By 1985 although they continued to sell restored and repaired second hand clothing, their new found cult status meant that demand was outstripping supply. Their solution was to manufacture their own range which referenced their love for and vast knowledge of British men’s style but pushed the boundaries of colour and pattern.
Their bold but traditional stylings ensured their success as both Savile Row’s old school and London’s bright young things embraced the “Hackett” look.
Popularity meant expansion at a rapid rate. Separate shops for shirts and ties, tailoring, specialist formalwear shop, a barber’s and gentlemen’s accessories shop, and a sportswear shop all opened within a hundred yards of each other and the area became affectionately known by London cab drivers as “Hackett Cross”.
Over thirty years later, Hackett can be found in fifteen European countries as well as in Hong Kong, Dubai and now of course at Go-British.
Hackett’s love affair with sport began when the co-founders were approached by army officers looking for sponsorship for their polo team. They created the famous polo shirt and the Hackett Polo Team was formed. So many requests were made for the shirts by customers that there was no choice but to put them into production and they are now possibly the most recognisable item they make.
Hackett is now proud to sponsor teams across the world in motor racing, polo, rowing and rugby.
The label offers a fresh, modern angle to menswear and accessories while embracing the rich heritage of British fashion and British sporting life making it the perfect staple in any man’s wardrobe. To use their tagline Hackett really does supply “Essential British Kit”.
