Teddy Bears
Here at Go-British we have decided to celebrate Britain's obsession with the teddy bear and have a selection of bears which are all delightfully togged out in outfits that are undeniably British.
Britain's most famous bears are Paddington Bear, Rupert The bear and Winnie the Pooh, each of which have their own very distinctive looks and characteristics and children's stories created out them.
In the very British drama series called Brideshead revisited (based on the Novels of Evelyn Waugh) the main character Sebastian has a teddy bear called Aloysius which accompanies him everywhere. Children all through the ages here in Britain have grown up with their very own bear, and if you ask anyone here about them, they will always be able to tell you the name of their first bear and may still even have them tucked away somewhere!
The Teddy Bear dates back to 1902 when Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was president of the United States. The president was a keen hunter, and he had gone to settle a border dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana and at the same time do a little hunting in the forest. The hunt turned out to be very poor with nothing being shot, so one of the men on the trip decided to capture a bear and brought it to Teddy Roosevelt and tied up so that he could shoot it.Teddy refused to shoot the creature and the following day a cartoon was drawn in the newspapers depicting that very scene.
The cartoon caused such a sensation in the states that a couple called Morris and Rose Mitchum in Brooklyn decided to make a soft toy bear to commemorate the incident and called it "Teddy's Bear". The toy became an instant hit and they started to make more of the creatures which looked cute and cuddly.
In Germany at the same time another toy company called Steiff was making toy bears as well, and about a year later when an American buyer came to the toy fair in Liepzig, he ordered 3,000 of the bears to sell back home, as Teddy bear fever had gripped the states.
Society ladies everywhere began to carry the cute little mascot around with them and it soon caught on here in Britain..
We have not stopped loving these little creatures and over the years, and a number of very famous British bear characters have been 'born' and have developed followings of their own!
Find here a selection of very British teddy bears that will make lovely gifts. You can also add it to another product to give the gift box that special touch.
