London Pied a Terre
Even confirmed country dwellers step foot in the big bad smoke from time to time. Trips to the theatre, shopping, and catching up with friends are the usual calls to the city and will often warrant an overnight stay.
For this reason well-heeled bumpkins will often have what is referred to as a “Pied a Terre” in London. In French this translates literally as “a foot on the ground”, but in English it refers to a modest little flat somewhere central that’s quite sufficient for occasional stay.
The London Pied a Terre may not be a primary residence, but the British like their creature comforts wherever they are, so all the usual suspects - fine china, cashmere throws, crystal, scented candles - make welcome house gifts, but you can afford to be a little more cosmopolitan in your choices.
