Vivienne Westwood
In the early 1970s a rather remarkable young woman from Derbyshire arrived on the London fashion scene with her partner Malcolm McLaren and friends who where right at the beginnings of the punk era.
Malcolm McLaren famously managed a band called the Sex Pistols whose brand of anarchistic sweary rock and roll and public bad behaviour became icons of their generation.
The clothing made by Vivienne for the band and their followers became synonymous with rebellion and anarchic free expression and as the bands image appeared more and more in the headlines for whatever bizarre reasons, the look of this new tribe were indelibly printed on everyone’s memory.
Long after punk, the band and Malcolm, Vivienne went about designing clothes and accessories that still had that original element of shock and wild experimentation to them even though they became much more flattering to wear.
The revival of the corset as outerwear, the vertiginous platform heels famous for the collapse of Naomi Campbell on her catwalk and the scattering of penises throughout many of her accessories and designs are just a few examples that bear testament to that.
Vivienne Westwood had then her first shop on London fashionable Kings Road. Her brand of outrageous, fun quirky and undeniably British style gathered a cult following, and over the years, Vivienne has consistently set the bar of British fashion when it comes to beautiful and extreme fashion.
She is without a doubt one of the most lauded and respected British fashion designers in Britain today and considered by many to be the Queen of the Fashion. She has also won the coveted British Fashion designer of the year award three times and was bestowed the title "Dame" Vivienne Westwood by Prince Charles in 2006.
