Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin was a British comic genius and an all round entertainer.

He was born into a very poor family in London in 1889 and although both his parents were actor/ singers the hardship he went through made him determined to better himself, and he became one of the most famous comedians and actors and the American Film institute in 1999 ranked him as the 10th greatest male actor of all time.

He was so talented that he not only made people laugh at a time of great depression during the World Wars, he became a film director, a producer, screenwriter, and composer as well as act!

Queen Elizabeth II knighted him when he was 85 years old as a Knight Commander of the British Empire.

Charlie Chaplain is most famous for his character the Tramp that became his signature look. Everything was supposed to be a crazy mix of contradictions. His jacket was too tight but his trousers too baggy. His Bowler hat was small and comical on his head but his shoes too big! He had a strange little moustache that resembled Hitler’s, and a bamboo walking cane that he was never without. This character was and international hit during the silent movie era and when sound came to film Chaplin refused to continue the character into the era of sound and the last silent film was with him in his role as the Tramp walking off into the horizon at the end of the film Modern Times.

He died in his sleep on Christmas day in 1977 and has been immortalized in a bronze statue of him in London’s Leicester Square.
