Keira Knightley & Carey Mulligan – The Designers’ Darlings:
Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan are two of Britain’s most successful young actresses. They both grew up in London, have been nominated for BAFTAs , Golden Globes and Oscars and both are known for their gamine frames and smart fashion choices.
As the daughter of a playwright and an actor, Knightley was always going to be on stage. Meanwhile Mulligan, the daughter of a hotelier and a lecturer was encouraged to take the academic route. Once their paths crossed on a 2005 production of Pride & Prejudice, they became great friends and their stars have ascended rapidly ever since taking them all the way to the heart of Hollywood. Their style has of course followed suit.
Due to the fact that they give good red carpet, they are feted by designers. They are English and so make sure that they are self deprecating but the reality is that each outing produces another star outfit that more often than not gets rave reviews from the fashion press and police alike.
Mulligan and Knightley both favour simple glamour. Mulligan tends to go for statement dresses with pared down makeup. She does a statement drop earring or necklace – never both. Sometimes a crystal hairband in her ever changing but short hair. She carries miniaudieres not large handbags. She’s wearing couture but doesn’t want to look like she’s used to it. Knightly is the archetypal English rose who likes to dress romantically on the red carpet. She often wanders down the road of vintage prim notably Chanel’s version of it and both her and Carey seem to be channelling 21st century versions of iconic actresses Mia Farrow and Audrey Hepburn on and off duty.
This is for those who want to go to parties with an outfit that screams “I always look like this – ridiculously well put together but never too much”. They show much savvy for ones so young. We do well to take note.
