Leather bindings are offered in traditional and modern styles. Leather is the finest bookbinding material. Nothing really compares to the feel and appearance of a good quality leather book. Shepherd’s use goatskins and calf for the majority of their work. Calf is the traditional choice for older English and European books. Goatskin is used for their more modern work and is the most durable of all leathers. Only pure vegetable tanned skins are used and up to thirty colours are stocked. Leather books are usually titled and decorated in gold leaf.
A vast collection of decorative brass tools and blocks are available for this part of the service. Lettering is applied to the bindings using heated brass tools. Brass alphabets in various type sizes are available but when a special typeface or particular logo is required, a special block can be made.
Gold Blocking
A block from any design using black and white artwork can be made for you. The finest blocks are traditionally made from brass, but for economy the majority of the blocks made are etched in zinc.
